What do GDP, WHO and ISPE say?
EU GDP links temperature mapping to initial use, risk and changes to facilities or temperature-control equipment. WHO describes mapping as a way to define and control the temperature distribution in storage areas. ISPE develops this into a risk-based lifecycle approach for controlled temperature chambers.

Risk-based requalification
For temperature-controlled storage, requalification is about whether the temperature distribution is still reliable. A small fridge with a stable history has a different risk profile from a large cold room with many door movements.
It is therefore sensible to define the frequency in your quality system or internal procedure, including why that frequency is appropriate.
When is requalification always sensible?
- After purchase or first use of new equipment.
- After relocation of a fridge, freezer or cold room.
- After repair to cooling system, door, sensor, ventilation or control system.
- After refurbishment or change to the room.
- After structural temperature deviations or repeated alarms.
- After a change in loading, storage layout or product criticality.
Practical risk factors
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Product criticality | The more sensitive the product, the stronger the justification for requalification should be. |
| Temperature history | Frequent alarms or deviations indicate higher risk. |
| Door movements | Frequent opening and closing can affect temperature distribution. |
| Room layout | Racking, pallets or new loading patterns can change airflow. |
| Seasonal influence | In some rooms, summer or winter conditions can affect thermal load. |
Do you need summer and winter mapping?
It depends on the space. WHO describes that for storage areas affected by seasonal conditions, mapping in the warmest and coldest periods may be needed to assess worst-case conditions throughout the year.
Ambient storage rooms, warehouses, areas with external walls, loading docks, windows, frequent door movements or strong HVAC load can be season-sensitive. For cold rooms and freezers, separate summer and winter mapping is not always necessary, but the rationale should be documented.
What is a sensible approach?
Document when periodic requalification is performed and which changes trigger a new assessment. This prevents discussion during audits and internal reviews.
We can help define a practical requalification approach that fits your equipment, products and risks.
